Conservation of Our Natural Resources

Historically, the Society has influenced government environmental policy by lobbying, participating at public hearings and educating about environmental affairs. Our projects have included the conservation of the San Cristobal Canyon in Barranquitas, protection of mangroves at Jobos Bay, management of the Mona Island Natural Reserve and the Piņones Forest. We have also supported efforts to save the nearly extinct Puerto Rican Parrot and Sabanera Pigeon. We assist in annual bird counts and promote recycling activities. Most recently, we have been active in promoting a stricter regulation of outdoor advertising, reassigning of two parcels to the Tortuguero Lagoon Reserve, and promoting the establishment of a Nature Center at the Monagas Park in the San Juan Metro Area.

We have been represented in several ad hoc and permanent committees convened at various times by Puerto Rico’s Secretary of Natural Resources. Most recent, we have participated in an Advisory Committee for Mona Island and currently in a group submitting recommendations for the review of current regulations on forests, hunting and critical species.
