Committees and Special Interest Group Activities

A unique feature of our Society is that it allows its members to engage in additional activities that are of their particular interest and in accordance with our purposes. We officially sponsor the following committees and special interest groups:

  • Conservation Committee. The thrust of our conservation efforts. Lobbies for the improvement of legislation and regulations that promote conservation.
  • Education Committee. Offers conferences, workshops and other educational activities to school and interested groups, and awards prizes and recognitions at school science fairs.
  • Camping Group. Camps frequently at our forests, beaches and nearby islands. Highlights are the annual Mona Island camping and periodic visits to nearby Culebra Island, St. John (USVI), Jost van Dyke and Tortola (BVI).
  • Bird Watching Group. Conducts periodic bird watching and participates in the annual bird count.
  • Marine Life. Organizes snorkeling and kayaking activities.
  • Astronomy. Organizes conferences and observation activities.
  • Archeology. Conducts archeology conferences and field trips.
  • Exploration. Carries out exploration trips to remote places that may later be visited in our monthly field trips or by other groups.

The committees and groups sometimes combine their activities. Thus, a camping activity may offer bird watching, snorkeling, kayaking or even star gazing opportunities.
